On today's podcast we have Elizabeth Ward who is discussing ways to encourage our children to eat healthier meals and snacks.

Elizabeth Ward is a registered dietitian, freelance writer and mother of three. Her latest book is Expect the Best, Your Guide to Healthy Eating Before, During, &#38; After Pregnancy. She is also the author of several other books, including The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Feeding Your Baby and Toddler, The Pocket Idiot’s Guide to the New Food Pyramids, and Pregnancy Nutrition: Good Health for You and Your Baby, and the co-author of Super Nutrition After 50 and Live Longer &#38; Better. Elizabeth regularly writes for publications such as Men's Fitness and WebMD, and blogs about about family nutrition and weight control issues for USAToday.com. She is also a member of the Medical Advisory Board of Kaboose.com.

As a spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association for nearly 10 years, Elizabeth was featured in nearly 1,000 print and broadcast interviews, including CNN, The Boston Globe, The New York Times, U.S. News &#38; World Report, and ABC Radio News. She has also conducted numerous satellite media tours, and has appeared on ABC World News Tonight to discuss MyPyramid for Kids.

Ward has been a speaker at more than 140 professional meetings, including The American Dietetic Association, The Florida Dietetic Association, The Massachusetts Dietetic Association, The Pennsylvania School Food Service Association, The National Association of Catering Executives, and the Tenth International Congress of Dietetics in Paris, France.

Ward created and conducted corporate nutrition education programs for five years with Medical Care Affiliates/Health Promotion Affiliates in Boston, where she also counseled patients about a healthy diet and lifestyle. She has also worked at the Joslin Diabetes Center and the American Heart Association, and for seven years counseled children and adults at Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates.

Ward completed her undergraduate degree in human nutrition at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst; a one-year dietetic internship at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston; and a masters degree in Mass Communication at Boston University. She is the recipient of the "125 Alumni to Watch" Award from the University of Massachusetts, and was named Recognized Young Dietitian of The Year by the Massachusetts Dietetic Association.</itunes:summary>

A diagnosis of Autism or an Autism Spectrum Disorder can shake the foundation of the family structure.  It doesn’t just affect the child diagnosed with it; it affects every single family member.   It tests the bonds between husband and wives, between parents and their children and even between siblings.  It forces each of us to dig deep into our hearts and souls and find the inner strength we never knew we had.

Yes, there are times when you’ll want to cry, times you’ll want to scream, times you’ll want to give up, times you’ll want to blame yourself or someone else.  But you’ll also enjoy laughter and giggles, triumphs and growth, love and affection, moments you’ll treasure forever.

Moments and skills other parents take for granted will be times of celebration and great joy for you and your family. We and our lives are special because they are special.

Susan's Story:
Five years ago I shifted my identity from a working mother to a stay at home mom. Not long after, I found myself addressing and searching for answers about our youngest child’s developmental delays. After much denial, shock, and yes even guilt, a formal diagnosis of Autism was determined in 2008.

A whole year went by and my daughter was still catatonic, nonverbal,  clumsy, stemming vocally, spinning, eating only a few foods and many non-edible items, exhausted from irregular sleep patterns, wearing diapers, isolated in her own world, and having tantrums because of fundamental frustrations… and we were going nowhere fast! Then out of the blue, during a meditation, I had an epiphany that she was exceptional regardless of these challenges and this label that had been imposed upon her being. This tiny thought transformed our lives. With raw frustration and a glimpse of hope, I fired all of her specialists, hired a new team and successfully took matters into my own hands. I spent tireless hours researching and implementing modalities within my reach. I knew we had a small window of opportunity and felt it was closing quickly.

As a Reiki Master with extensive knowledge in the alternative health arena, a master’s degree in counseling and unconditional love, I knew I was equipped to take my power back as a mother and became my child’s biggest advocate. I stopped saying my daughter was autistic and started saying, “My child experiences autism” or “My child is diagnosed with autism”. See, we can change our experiences and labels, but if we determine we are this label or that experience that is harder to change. I shifted my perception of my child being disabled to this phenomenal spiritual being that was here to offer immense lessons to me and all of the lives she touches. Autism became a gift not a disability in my motherly eyes. I became grateful towards God (the Universe, Spirit, or whatever you call your higher power) for trusting me with this incredible soul! I started to interact with her differently and I started to find joy where there used to be heavy despair. This shift in ME caused amazing shifts in my daughter.

This past year has been full of huge accomplishments and joyful milestones. We have gone from catatonic to an expression of life; non-verbal to the use of pronouns, conjunctions and some functional speech; no eye contact to eye contact without ABA protocols; isolated play to parallel play and then  interactive play; and so much more!!! We are learning nothing is outside of our reach with a little time, patience and intent.

On today's podcast we welcome our guest Cristina Proaño-Carrión.

Born and raised in the Ecuadorian capital, Quito, Cristina is a professional Aromatherapist since 1994, with studies  in the U.K., and Purdue University in Indiana.

Cristina has more than 15 years of experience formulating aromatherapy products for the spa, fitness and hospitality industry and speaking with North and South American audiences on television and radio as well as in seminars and workshops.  She’s the owner and formulator of Aromandina, a  line of highly therapeutic, sustainable aromatherapy products that are formulated specifically, scientifically and through years of hands-on experience to assist with the needs and challenges that are affecting our daily lives

On today's podcast we welcome our guest Lindy Clark, an author and someone who lives many food allergies, including gluten.  Below is more information on Lindy Clark.

There is no question that Lindy Clark is living a life driven by the wind. Since leaving her childhood home in Green Bay, WI in 1977 she along with her husband of almost 33 years, has moved 17 times. In 1976, while at Evangel University in Springfield, MO she met her husband Don. Because of frequent illnesses and almost no money, she and her husband left college and moved to Mineral Ridge, OH her husband's home town. There they began a life of extremes.

As a teenager and now a new bride Lindy had been in a struggle with what is known as anorexia nervosa.  She recalls, "It was when I heard about the death of Karen Carpenter that I realized I had the same problem." The divorce of her parents at the age of 12 had taken an unseen toll on her. No one really knew that she was struggling with such things, not even her husband.  After two years of marriage their daughter Kristen was born. On the day she was born Lindy gained the final pound that the doctor insisted she gain. These were not really happy times for her.

The hidden secrets of anorexia nervosa were never really exposed to anyone except a couple of close friends and later her husband. The condition was complicated by the birth of her daughter. A 3 year post-partum depression descended on her like a cloud. Although she had gone for counseling there was no real sustained healing.  In 1991, after 20 years of suffering in silence, she finally found healing through the prayers of faithful caring friends. From that point on the battle was no longer raging on the inside. Now she was free. The residual effects of anorexia are still with her, but it no longer controls her life.

During these last 33 years Lindy has developed several talents. She sews most of her own clothes, and the window and bedding treatments for her home. Since her teenage years she has taught flute and piano lessons. The past 9 years she and her husband operated D &#38; L Studios.  The studio averaged about 100 students  per week. Music instruction is given for all ages in piano, flute, voice and trumpet.

Lindy also loves to cook and bake. She began cooking for her family at age 10. As time went by she picked up tips from her grandmother Minnie and her husband's grandmother Clara. The pleasure of baking increased as she took on various roles. When her husband began church ministry her role as dessert maker took a whole new meaning. Soon people were requesting that she bring her desserts to the many functions associated with being the wife of a pastor. Whenever there has been a special party or function to attend, she would be asked, "would you bring a dessert? " This she has done and always reaped the reward of great comments. When Lindy was diagnosed with allergies to wheat, eggs, dairy and soy the panic set in. What would I cook? What would I bake?

It was then she discovered the gluten-free world. But the breads at the store were expensive and tasted bad. Desserts were worse. In 2008 she began experimenting with gluten-free flours. In February of 2009 she started to record her recipes made with GF flour and by November of 2009 published her </itunes:summary>
