Depression and Sadness is there truly a difference?
Some think that depression and sadness are one in the same, but they are not.
The signs although may seem similar are quite significantly different.
Below is a list to show how they differ and how you can tell if you or someone you know is suffering from depression or sadness.
Depression
- Usually persistent and long-term. Will last all day, every day from more than 2 weeks)
- May be related to biological factors that are triggered by an event such as loss of employment, divorce, death of a family member, chronic illness, etc.
- Feelings of guilt, worthlessness or perhaps have feelings of dying
- Depressed mood combined with anxiety and irritability
- Trouble sleeping
- Changes in weight and/or appetite
- Low concentration and memory problems
Sadness
- Temporary; not all-encompassing
- Response to a death, loss or disappointment of some type
- Feelings of gloom
- Weepy
- Loss of appetite
- Interrupted sleep patterns
If you know someone suffering from the above it is important to have them speak to a professional. Depression unfortunately will lead to further illness and in some cases can lead to suicidal thoughts.
Until next time,
