Chewing gum also aids in the digestive process. It is well-known that chewing stimulates brain areas which actives digestion in the stomach and small intestine. By chewing gum, you are actually encouraging digestion to happen, which can reduce heartburn.

“As evidence of this, a recent study found that about 75% of participants with chronic heartburn ate quickly and did not chew enough. Out of all the heartburn remedies, vinegar appears to be strange. We all know that vinegar’s is acetic acid and it does not seem logical that adding extra acid would make the remedies list.

“One study involved having acids (including acetic acid, the primary ingredient of vinegar) placed at various points along the esophagus and throat.

Researches found that this stimulated the salivary glands to produce extra saliva. More interestingly, it turns out that the higher the amount of vinegar is placed on the throat, the stronger the salivary glands were stimulated. It is theorized that this occurs because the higher the acid reaches on the esophagus, the larger the heartburn swell, and the stronger the body’s response to try to quell this heartburn. It turns out the body actually has its own defense system against heartburn.

Drinking vinegar would actually place an acid (acetic acid) at the highest possible point, thereby tricking the body into thinking there was a large acid swell. This in turn results in a massive burst in salivary production and digestive activity, quelling many heartburn issues on the spot.”

Based on this information you will have to decide if this is for you. Some people have reported some relief from this remedy while others have reported discomfort by using vinegar. If it does not work for you, you should take another way.

The best way to elevate the bed is to stack square pieces of 2X4 inches wood under both the bed legs. For my wife I stacked two pieces of wood which elevated the head of the bed 4 inches.

Celery – Celery may reduce that burning sensation simply because it requires you to chew a lot to eat the celery. With all the chewing you produce saliva, and saliva is one of the best heartburn remedies around.

Iodine Supplements – Adding an iodine supplement to your diet may improve your heartburn over time. This is because there is a strong link between hypothyroidism and acid reflux.

Milk – Heartburn Remedies milk can help neutralize stomach acid as a buffer solution. The problem with neutralization of stomach acid is that it impedes the digestion process. Another side effect of milk is that it may increase acid reflux for those that are lactose intolerant or allergic to milk proteins.

Mustard – Mustard does work to reduce that burning sensation simply because it includes vinegar as one of the ingredents. Just a spoonful or two should work in a couple of minutes. It can be very useful if you can work mustard into your daily cooking.

Not a good solution for night time acid reflux because you do not want to go to bed with a full stomach which can lead to acid reflux and heartburn while you sleep.

Pineapple Benefits – Pineapple contains high concentrations of an enzyme known as bromelain. Bromelain is thought to aid protein digestion and reduce inflammation, which might in turn improve digestion and reduce acid reflux.

Herbalists recommend marshmallow root tea that is usually made by adding one tbsp of the dried root to a cup of boiling water, keeping it covered for at least 10 minutes, and then straining. It is suggest to drink up to three cups a day. Warning, the use of Marshmallow by patients suffering from diabetes and pregnant or nursing women should be avoided.

Almonds – Chew on raw almonds until the burning sensation eases. Just a handful of almonds should do it.
